Why should your cadets get involved in orienteering when they already have Land Nav as a course?

Most people lump all navigation methods under one big umbrella. The common way to think is that once you take the JROTC Land Nav courses, you are good to go, and there is no need to enroll in Orienteering. The truth is that these are two separate forms of navigation, and there is very little overlap between the two disciplines. While Land Nav is useful and should be taught to all cadets, Orienteering is just as important to JROTC cadets differently..

The amount of updates needed depend on the park. Forested areas do not have as many.
This map will last for years as long as small updates are kept up on a regular basis.
Lodging expense and IRS Mileage reimbursement may be required depending on location.

Difference between Orienteering and Land Nav

Although both disciplines have the same objective, the methods are different.

  • Unlike land navigation, Orienteering requires interpreting an extremely detailed Orienteering map and making navigational decision quickly without heavily relying on other tools.
  • Orienteers do utilize and compass as needed but the compass is used more as a safety net tool rather than for precise navigation.

  • The biggest difference is that Orienteering is considered to be a competitive sport. The tools that are used are a compass and your brain.

  • The Maps used are Internationally standardized and extremely detailed.

Custom Orienteering events

  • All events use IOF official equipment including E-Punching
  • Events are always in Parks or places that have been mapped using IOF Standards
  • Professionally designed courses as used at the National Orienteering Competitions

  • Most events are in “Score-O format” (Our Standard Score O course with 10-25 Cadets would be $450. Prices increase by $35 for every additional 5 Cadets)

  • Typical events take from 4-6 hours
  • Custom meets can also be held on your school grounds.

Group Trainings

  • Trainings are Custom events but with detailed classroom instructions and outside exercises
  • Training classes are taught by an OUSA Certified instructor
  • We supply all specialized equipment and class material. We do need an indoor space to conduct the classes.

  • 5 days 10-25 Cadets

Orienteering JROTC League creation

  • Orienteering Leagues are clusters of JROTC Schools that compete against one another.
  • The schools are close enough together so that transportion options exist.
  • There should be at least 3 schools participating but the more the better.
  • We consult and advise on tools needed to make this happen.
